This ‘Toy’ breed of dog is known for its adorable appearance and make great companion dogs.

These dogs trace all the way back to the 13th century. Because they date all this way back, they are thought to have many close cousins today (e.g. Maltese and Havanese).

Classed by the British Kennel Club as a ‘small dog’, their height usually varies between 23 and 28cms of height.

Their distinctive soft, silky white corkscrew curls give the Bichon Frise a distinctive look standing out against their dark eyes and noses.

Temperament of the Bichon Frise

Frequently described as being cheerful, intelligent, and feisty. This little breed is usually very excitable and needs plenty of exercise to burn through their extra energy. It’s usually recommended to ensure they get 30-60 minutes of activity daily.

They are sociable little dogs and will love to be part of a busy household. Although, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time and are prone to separation anxiety. So it’s important to make sure someone is home for most of the day.

Grooming a Bichon Frise

Although they are a great hypoallergenic breed of dog, that doesn’t mean that they are low maintenance! They will need frequent (usually daily) brushing and bathing along with regular trips to professional groomers.

Some dog owners do learn how to professionally groom their Bichon Frise to save them the trips. But be warned – it isn’t easy and takes a long time to do right.

Beware! Bichon Frise as a breed can also be incredibly prone to skin problems and allergies.
