Forever Malinois

An energetic and loyal dog that suits confident dog owners

The Malinois breed is one of 4 distinct varieties of Belgian Shepherds. Each variety is named after its place of origin in Belgium, and the Malinois is no exception!

They’re strong, sturdy and naturally protective dogs who thrive being surrounded by their family. It’s because of this that they’re generally not recommended for dog owners who work long hours or have busy lifestyles that their pets can’t be involved in.

6 breeds that are great for those with a busy schedule

What does a Malinois Belgian Shepherd look like?

This medium-large dog measures in at around 55-66cms and weighs around 20-30kgs when they reach adulthood. For this reason, they typically do not fare well in smaller flats or homes without enough garden space to explore.

The British Kennel Club recognises 12 breed standard colour variations, including:

  • Fawn
  • Grey Black Mask
  • Red
  • And Red Grey Sable.

Their short, double-coated fur makes them perfect for temperamental outdoor weather. Although they have fairly minimal grooming requirements, be warned, that they do shed twice yearly so are unlikely to be suitable for those with a dog allergy.

You’ll probably notice that they share many similarities with the popular German Shepherd breed. In fact, many dog lovers would be forgiven for confusing the Malinois with the German Shepherd.

How is a Malinois different to a German Shepherd?

At first glance, they share many similarities in their physical appearance. However, upon looking closer there are a number of differences which can help you identify which breed you’re looking at.

We’ve covered some of the key differences between the breeds.

Size:

A Malinois dog tends to be smaller than a German Shepherd with much lighter bones. A German Shepherd is usually described as longer than they are tall.

Body Shape/Profile:

Malinois Belgian Shepherds will stand with their weight on their toes to give them a square-shaped body profile. Whereas a German Shepherd has a sloping back and has a much smoother outline.

Colouring:

The British Kennel Club recognises a more diverse breed standard colouring for Malinois dogs. With German Shepherds, you’ll usually see a variation of tan or sable with a black saddle.

Ears and Head:

The Malinois dog breed is described as being a much more defined and angled head with smaller and triangular ears.
