It’s fair to say that 2020 wasn’t the year we all expected – but how did this affect the most popular breeds?
We looked at the leading 10 dog breeds in the UK in 2020 based on the number of registrations (according to Statista.com.
It’s fair to say that some of these breeds were completely expected – including Britain’s long-term favourite the Labrador.
However, some of the breeds may just surprise you.
1. Labrador Retriever
This is not a shock -- this breed has topped the American Kennel Club's ratings since 2013!
They've been the UK's favourite for even longer - securing their place in the hearts of the nation with their adorable look and personable personality.

2. French Bulldog
This breed has been steadily climbing the AKC's charts, and was only just pipped to the post in 2020.

3. Cocker Spaniel
It's hard not to fall in love with a Cocker's expressive eyes and beautiful long ears. It's easy to see why this breed is so beloved.

4. Bulldog
Loyal, easy-going and perfect for apartment living. This breed has claimed a top 5 spot with AKC's most popular breed since 2013.
But, they've not claimed a position in the top 3... never raising higher than 4th position. Will the year of the Bulldog be coming soon?
5. Dachshund (specifically the Miniature Smooth Haired)
Extremely loyal - often latching on to their favourite person. If you're looking for a forever furry friend, then you've found a fine match here.

7. Golden Retriever
Pipped by their cousin breed (Labrador Retrievers), this wonderful working dog is heavily associated with the occupation of 'Guide Dogs'.

10. Staffordshire Bull Terrier
A highly affectionate breed who will do anything for their human. They are known to build strong bonds with their owners.
Despite their tough exterior, this dog is known for being a lover and has even earned the nickname of the 'Nanny Dog' in the UK.

It's easy to see why these breeds have been noted as Britain's favourite breeds of 2020. It's true to say that COVID has impacted on everything - we wonder if we will see a drastically different list next year....
