What To Know When Walking Your Puppy for the First Time

Puppy First Walk Tips

Where you decide to walk your dog depends mostly on where you live with your pet. However, we've put together handy tips that all new dog owners can use.

  • Make sure your new puppy is used to being on a seucre collar and lead

A good way to do this is by praising good behaviour. Offering reward incentives for displaying desirable behaviour is a great way to help new puppies learn.

  • Make sure that the collar has an ID tag with your contact details

Having your up-to-date conact details on your pet's ID tag helps make sure your pet is returned to you if they get lost or dognapped.

Other ways to help protect your puppy from dognapping

  • Teach your new puppy their name

Before you go for walks with your new pet, they should know their name and return to you if called. This is important as it helps keep your pet safe on their walks.

  • Don’t forget the poo bags

The law states that all dog poo must be picked up by their owners. Failing to do so can result in a fine.

They do not accept not having a suitable bag as an excuse. So, always make sure you have plenty of dog poo bags on your walks.

  • Protect your puppies on Wintery walks

Keeping your puppy safe and warm is important for their well-being. Some breeds are more susceptible to suffering in the cold than others. There are a number of accessories out there to help them keep warm on Winter walks.

Another consideration is that it gets dark much earlier in the evenings. It might be best to only go for daytime walks where possible.

If you need to go for a walk when it's already dark on, make sure that both you and your pet have something reflective on.

  • Allow time for your puppy to digest food before walking

This is to make sure that they don't make themselves sick when exercising or getting excited.

  • It's important to get the walking balance just right

The amount of exercise you dog requires will depend on its size and breed. But it is safe to say that all dogs need at least one walk a day. Puppies need far less exercise than fully-grown dogs.

A general rule is five minutes exercise for each month of age up to twice a day until the puppy is fully grown. For example, a three month old pup will require 15 minutes up to twice a day increasiung to 20 minutes when they are four mlonths old and so on. When they are fully grown, they can go out for longer.
