Do you know how much sleep your dog actually needs?
The amount of sleep a dog needs depends on their age, with puppies actually needing more sleep than adult dogs!
Puppies
- Puppies sleep 16–20 hours per day
- They sleep a lot because they're developing quickly and are stimulated by exploring their new surroundings
- They need a sleep schedule because they can't go long without needing to relieve themselves
Adult dogs
- Adult dogs sleep 12–14 hours per day
- They sleep in shorter bursts than humans
- They're considered polyphasic sleepers, meaning they sleep multiple times throughout the day
Larger breeds
- Larger breeds can sleep up to 18 hours per day
Sleep tips
- Create a quiet, dark, comfortable area for your dog to sleep
- Make sure your dog gets enough exercise and mental stimulation
- Let your dog out before bed to reduce middle-of-the-night wake-ups
- Consider crate training to give your dog a safe, sheltered home base
