Dachshunds are loved in the UK for their unique look and spirit.
Adorable, lovable Dachshunds are often referred to as Sausage Dogs because of their unique shape – long, muscular bodies with very short legs. The breed originates from Germany where they were bred to hunt down wounded prey such as deer and hares.
There are two types in the UK – Standard and Miniature each with three varieties of fur - smooth, long, and wiry. The short-haired Dachshund is arguably the most well-known.
Feisty little Dachshunds may be small in stature, but they are big on personality. They are lively, brave little souls with a powerful jaw and bite. Their long noses make them good scent hounds and they make lovely family pets as they are loyal, affectionate and energetic. No wonder these cuties are among the most popular breeds in the UK.

It's common to see these dogs make use of ramps instead of making them use the stairs!
Are they good family dogs?
Dachshunds can be amazing amazing dogs for the family, as they are loyal and protective, they are pack dogs and enjoy being part of the family! They are good around children, as long as the children are well behaved. They don't need as much exercise as other breeds and are great companions.
Things to consider when buying a Dachshund dog:
If you are looking to buy a Dachshund, it is worth knowing that they have a deep bark and can be shy and suspicious of strangers. They will certainly let you know if someone unfamiliar is approaching! They also love to use their long noses to dig about in the garden. They may tend to overeat so keep an eye on your dog’s diet.
As with all dogs, a gentle, consistent and patient approach is required when training. Dachshunds are wilful independent thinkers and will benefit from learning commands early in their lives as they may tend to run off if they spot something which incites their innate hunter instincts.
